The Bills, Jaguars, Chargers and Commanders are off, and when this newspaper pulled the lineups on Thursday morning, ten starters across six rosters were players who will not play. Josh has three: Austin Ekeler, Ladd McConkey (who is also Out) and Khalil Shakir. Nick has two, Parker Washington and Tyler Bass, which is at least an improvement on last week, when he had no quarterback. Sean has two, Keaton Mitchell and Brenton Strange. Tim has Brian Thomas. Jeff has Cameron Dicker. And Michael — who started two bye-week zeros in Week 5 and won, and three in Week 6 and lost — has James Cook on the Bills’ bye and Davante Adams, who went on injured reserve this week, still at wide receiver. That is three weeks running with dead slots in his lineup, and he plays Anthony, who is 3-3 and the market’s No. 1 roster. Marcus counted. Marcus keeps a running tally of it now, in the sidebar, like a man logging a leak.
The waiver run was busy at the top of the priority list. John E. won Omar Cooper over claims from mike, John P. and Anthony, and won the Browns defense over mike; mike won the Jets defense over John E. and Zonovan Knight over John E.; John E. also lost a claim on the Titans defense because his roster was full, which is becoming his signature move. Then, seven minutes after the run, John E. signed Kyle Pitts, and a minute after that he signed Geno Smith and dropped Kimani Vidal, the running back he’d won on waivers a week earlier. Geno Smith starts. Tyler Shough, who scored 26.96 last week, is gone from the lineup, and so is Trevor Lawrence, who scored 27.34 on the bench, because the Jaguars are off. John E. has started three different quarterbacks in seven weeks, and the one he benched last week scored 27.34. He plays Sean, whom he owns 15-6 lifetime, and Sean is starting two guys on bye.
The slate
Jonathan (5-1) vs. Josh (1-5). Jonathan leads 13-6 and starts C.J. Stroud with Jayden Daniels on the Commanders’ bye. He also won Harrison Butker back on waivers Thursday and dropped Cam Little — so in three weeks he has cut Butker for a receiver and cut the replacement kicker for Butker. Germie Bernard, 25.7 on the bench last week, is in the flex. Roschon Johnson plays tonight. Josh’s three bye starters are covered above; Aaron Rodgers starts again, Colston Loveland plays tonight, Chuba Hubbard and Carnell Tate are the healthy ones. If Josh leaves the lineup alone, Jonathan is 6-1 by about Sunday afternoon.
Nick (2-4) vs. John P. (3-3). Nick leads 17-8, the biggest edge he holds over anyone. Michael Penix starts again after 17.1; McCaffrey after 30.7; Darren Waller after 0.0. Washington and Bass are the bye problem. John P. gets Jahmyr Gibbs and Sam LaPorta back from the Lions’ bye, starts Ryan Flournoy — won on waivers Thursday — at receiver, and has Flournoy on Monday night. A John P. win is his 110th in the regular season.
Timothy (4-2) vs. Kevin (3-3). Timothy leads 9-6 and is coming off his 100th win. He starts Jordan Love, questionable, at quarterback, with Dak Prescott and Cam Ward on the bench; Saquon Barkley is questionable for Monday night; Golden and Egbuka are questionable too. Kevin has Jake Bates back from the bye he started him on, Jake Ferguson on Monday, and a 90th career win available.
John E. (1-5) vs. Sean (4-2). Covered above, mostly. Add this: Zach Charbonnet is in John E.’s lineup at running back while still on the PUP list, and Luther Burden plays tonight. Sean has CeeDee Lamb and Brandon Aubrey on Monday night and Ashton Jeanty and Chris Olave on Sunday, and 74 and 82 in his last two games. The series is 15-6 John E. Nobody can explain it. Least of all this week.
mike (3-3) vs. Owen (2-4). Owen leads 12-6. mike starts Zonovan Knight, won Thursday, beside Bucky Irving, questionable, and starts the Jets defense — the fifth defense he has rostered this season, after the 49ers, Bills, Jaguars and Colts. George Pickens plays Monday. Owen starts Tyler Allgeier with Omarion Hampton on a bye, has DeMario Douglas tonight and Javonte Williams on Monday, and no injury flags in his lineup for the second straight week.
Tim (3-3) vs. Jeff (4-2). Jeff leads 7-4 and starts Sam Darnold with Josh Allen on a bye; Travis Kelce starts at tight end, questionable, with Dalton Kincaid questionable on the bench, and Cameron Dicker was in the lineup on a bye Thursday morning. Tim, coming off 42.6, has Lamar Jackson and Quinshon Judkins back in the lineup — both were Out last week and scored 0.0 each, both are questionable now — plus Brian Thomas on the Jaguars’ bye and Henderson and Odunze tonight. A Tim win is his 75th. A Tim lineup that plays is the first order of business.
Anthony (3-3) vs. Michael (4-2). Anthony leads 13-9. Drake Maye plays tonight for Anthony; Justin Jefferson, questionable, is in the flex; Dallas Goedert plays Monday. Michael’s situation is covered above, and if it holds he is starting seven players against the top roster in the market. Rhamondre Stevenson plays tonight for him. Anthony has outscored Michael 247.86 to 182.58 over the last two weeks.
